A natural collaboration
Swedes and wood have had a long relationship together. From butter knives to summer cabins, for centuries it's been the go to material for making. So when it came time to make the SKYMNINGEN lamp, using birch wood was a natural choice. The only tricky thing was finding wood that could be cut into gentle curvy shapes and was just as happy in the tropics as in Scandinavia. But after many months of learning and refining we're proud to share this celebration of wood and design.
“SKYMNINGEN pendant lamp originated from an art-based project I did in the early 2000s. The idea was to create a complex shape in only a few steps, like calligraphy with shapes. Production technology has now caught up with the experiment and the result is an exciting lamp with three-dimensional features that creates volume and depth. One could even say that the lamp has floristic qualities while also providing a pleasant light ― and makes everyone feel moved in some way.”
What is ABS plastic?
ABS plastic is a strong and stable material with a glossy surface – making it perfect for especially used everyday objects like cutlery drawers, kitchen utensils, toothbrush mugs and bathroom hooks. Like most plastic materials, ABS is mainly made from oil-based, non-renewable raw materials. But development is progressing and we are using more and more recycled ABS. It is an important step towards our goal of only using plastic that is recycled or from renewable sources.
